Initial Assessment of Newborn Baby in NICU



1. Immediate Stabilization (First Priority)

ABCs

  • Airway: Clear? Position head, suction if needed

  • Breathing: RR, chest movement, grunting, nasal flaring, apnea

  • Circulation: HR, color, capillary refill, pulses

👉 Attach monitors: HR, RR, SpO₂, BP, temperature


2. Vital Signs

  • Heart rate: 120–160 bpm

  • Respiratory rate: 30–60/min

  • Temperature: 36.5–37.5°C (axillary)

  • Oxygen saturation: As per gestational age & condition

  • Blood pressure: Size-appropriate cuff


3. Gestational Age & Growth

  • Determine gestational age (Ballard score if needed)

  • Measure:

    • Weight

    • Length

    • Head circumference

  • Classify:

    • AGA / SGA / LGA
